Survey

We decided to survey a number of people (20) to find out what our idea was best suited at and how best promote it. Here it is:-

Opening Titles and Credits.

This is a film with typical opening credits - this is good as it only gets the important information across - it tells you the:
Producer
The Main Actors - the main three are next to some sort of picture of themselves so the audience recognises them when the film begins.
Then some more actors...
Followed by the Executive producers...
Then who the film was Developed by...
And then 'Based on the series of graphic novels by...'
The title then fills the whole screen.

Questionaire.

This is another questionaire we did for someone from our target audience. This is so we had a better idea if our location and storyline would be suitable.

Gender: Female
Age: 15
Occupation: Student

What is your favorite film genre and why?
Horror, because it's funny to watch with other people when they start jumping up and down and hiding behind pillows.

What is your favorite horror film and why?
Hide and Seek, because it's one which links back to the beginning when you see the clock and the time on it. I also think the story line is good.

What is your least favorite horror film and why?
The Human Centipede, it's just too gory to actually be able to watch.

Where do you think a good place for a horror movie to be set and why?
Anywhere where public people are able to go, like a park.

Where do you think a not so good place for a horror movie to be set is and why?
Somewhere with sand, like a desert as it doesn't seem realistic.

Do you think a pub cellar would be a good place to set a horror and why?
Yes i suppose so as lots of people go there, but the story line would have to be good.

Script.

Script

By having a script, we will be more organised as we will know what the order is for the things to happen, by having this we will know what we have to do and when we have to do it. It will also be a reminder for what shots go where and from what angles etc.
In the end, we ended up not having a script as no dialogue would be used in our most recent idea. This was ideal as it made it better for the audience to follow the storyline rather than concentrating on the speech within the first opening two minutes.

Jobs

Danielle: will be a camera operator and the producer.
Charlie: will be a sound operator and the director.

By having certain jobs for each person, we will be able to organise much better as each one of us will know what were meant to be doing, and how we are meant to do it. We will help each other will all of the bits if it needs more than one person to do so but both of us will concentrate on our certain areas to do. We have decided who does which job by seeing who did each thing best in the preliminary task, and then chose the person who did each thing best.

Job Descriptions

Producer: A film producer oversees the production of the film, including integrity, voice and vision. They are in charge of everyone involved in the film. They can fund the film themselves or find a film sponsor.

Director: A film director is the person who instructs the actors and film crew in the film making. They are the people who come up with the creative parts of the film. They are under the producer.

Camera Operator: The person who operates the video camera, they are told by the director what it wants to look like. They use a variety of the equipment including a camera and moving tripod.

Sound Operator: The person who operates all the sound equipment, such as the boom operator and the production sound mixer. They are in charge of making the audio of the film good.

We will decide who does what job in our group by seeing who does each job best.

Interview

We decided to interview someone from our Target Audience so we knew what the people who favoured our genre would prefer to see in a new horror film, by doing this we are able to make sure our film including our two minute opening is appealing to our main Target Audience.

Gender: Female.
Age: 22.
Occupation: Work in a pub.

What is your favorite film genre? & Why?
Horror, because I like the suspense and the adrenaline you receive from watching them.

What's your favorite Horror film? & Why?
Insidious. It's my favorite because it seems like it could happen to anyone as it's set in a house with a
normal seeming family until the action starts.

What's your least favorite Horror film? & Why?
Paronormal Activity. It's my least favorite because it never show's you what's actually doing the haunting which make it seem less real. It also starts weird as it's not the beginning of the story but the 3rd film is.

Where do you think a good place for a Horror to be set is? & Why?
In a house or somewhere natural, as it make's you think it could happen to anyone which is part of the bit why it is a Horror.

Where do you think a not so good place for a Horror to be set is? & Why?
A woods, it can get boring just running through the woods, unless it's set in the woods because of the things which happen. Such as in "Dog Soldiers".

Do you think a pub cellar would be a good place to set a Horror? & Why?
Yes i do, as most people go to a pub so it makes them think it could happen to them LIKE ME! or to someone who they know.

Target Audience

After considering who we wished to target our film at we decided it would be best to consult data on film audiences from the UK Film Council. Through this data, we found that there is a potentially grand market for us to target. Just under a third of cinema goers enjoy Horror films, with 15% saying it's their all time favorite genre. We then looked at the demographic data and it showed that we should mainly be aiming our product at females under the age of 35, however it is also rather popular with males around the same age as well.

Therefore our target market is female, under the age of 35, and in the C2 social class.

The best places for us to market our product is obviously places where females under the age of 35 and in the C2 social class will see it most. The places we could market this film in is after certain programs on TV, such as "Trueblood" "Vampire diaries" or "The only way is Essex", this is because this is what these type of people stereotypically watch. We could also advertise on youtube when they are watching Horror movie trailers, as they will be Horror film 'fanatics' and our film could appeal to them. However I also think it would be a good idea to advertise this Horror film in the cinema's before a Horror movie, this is because they will be people that like Horror films and our's could appeal to them as well.

New Idea

We have had a new idea for our two minute opening, our idea would change the whole story-line of the film and not just the beginning two minutes.
Instead of teenager's being the one's who get killed throughout the film by the ghost, it will be a family. We think this would be more appealing to the target audience, as it will have more emotion behind the idea which stereo-typically is more appealing to females under the age of 35.
It will also be easier for us to get reliable actors for it, as we will have a wider range of people who will be able to spare their time to be a part of our film.
We shall have to think this through thoroughly so we don't loose the main plot of our two minute opening.

BBFC

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) is an independent, non governmental body funded through the fees it charges to those who submit films and video works for classification. Video works are taken to include video games, films, and programmes released on DVD and Blu-ray.

Things they take into consideration are discrimination, drugs, horror, imitable behaviour, language, nudity, sex, theme, titles and photo or pattern sensitivity, motion sickness and reactions to low frequency sound.

The last house on the left was banned until 2002, and then was released cut, it was then later released uncut in 2008.
The human centipede II was originally banned due to sexual violence and potential obscenity. This film was given an official Age Certificate of 18 by the BBFC on 6th October 2011 while the distributors agreed to make 32 cuts before its release.

The certificate our film would get is a 15
It would get this certificate because it does not contain any discrimination, drugs, nudity or sex. It also does not contain much language, if it did contain any of these things then the certificate would have to be an 18. The reason we made it 15 is because it contains violence which may not be suitable for under 15's.

Other films from our genre:
The Omen (2006) - 15
The Exorcism of Emily Rose - 15
Wolf Creek - 18
The Ring Two (2005) - 15

We also based the certificate of our film on film certificates for films like ours in our genre. This way we would know what the general age range for our film should be. By knowing our film certificate we will know if we have to leave certain parts of the film out because they are from a higher certificate. We will also know what were allowed to put in, so we are able to get the best effects in within reason.

Blurb

'Ever wonder what's lurking right beneath your nose during your evening pint? No its not your bear belly! How about a nostalgic, cadaverous, incorporeal being out for revenge.
The best things come in small packages... well, so they say.
It goes from bad to brutal for the new tenants when their son Fabian is vigorously murdered in the cellar.
Join them on their enthralling race to preserve their lives.'

We decided this would be our blurb as it is not too long but gets the idea of the film across well. It gives people an idea of what is going to happen in the film, but leaves a lot of questions unanswered creating enigma.

Costume:- Armour to show authority, Man wearing a coat with beads to show his importance and power, The boy is wearing trousers and arm selves as he is fighting, and the men fighting him are wearing rags as they are unimportant. The women are wearing dresses.
Lighting:- The lighting is very low key, this helps set the tone of the rest of the movie. It makes the movie seem like it had a 'darker' tone to it.
Actors: There is a mix of ages and genders in the film.
Make-up:- There is dirt on some of the fighters faces, but that's all.
Setting:- The film is set in a castle with dungeons.

There is then another close up to show the emotion of the man. There is a long shot later followed by tracking establishing medium shots from different angles due to the speed of the fighting.

Editing
To start there is a little animation bit and after this the establishing shot of the setting fades in. It is normal speed with slow editing. The editing then gets quicker in the fight scene, this also has slow motion bits including the jump and hit followed later by the boy catching the arrow. It also has jump cuts. The titles appear at the beginning, and follow one after the other. The werewolves are also edited in.

Sounds
Diagetic:- The growling and roar of the werewolf, the door clicking followed by the shot of the arrow this is then followed by a growl and then a baby crying, and the crossbow click but no shot. Then the door smashing shut. It then jumps to the boy landing on all fours with a small noise, there is then the fighting sounds such as "argh" and "ourgh". Finally there is an arrow shot and then dialogue. The dialogue creates enigma to what is going to happen next.
Non-Diagetic:- Quiet music which creates suspense. Then you can hear the men and their army sounds. Narration at the beginning to set the storyline. Lightening also helps set the mood and tone of the movie. There is then a windy sound followed by a build up of sound which adds suspense.

Target Audience

After analysing data on film audiences from the UK Film Council, it is clear there is a potentially large market for us to target. Almost a third of cinema goers enjoy Horror films. with 15% saying it's their favourite genre.
Looking at demographic data it appears that we should be mainly aiming our product at females under the age of 35, although it is popular with males as well.

By knowing this information we will be able to base our film by keeping these in mind so we are able to appeal to the largest possible target market open to us. By doing this we will be able to get the most views of our film. Due to the fact that we know this information we will also be able to find out when the best times to advertise are and also where the best places to do so are.

Conventions of a Horror....

Horror conventions tend to create a lot of enigma, this is one of the most important things to have in a horror movie with out it the suspense drops dramatically and therefore isn't as scary, so the viewer isn't kept as hooked as they could be.
Mise-en-scene...
Costume:- victims tend to have causual clothing, murderers wearing black or dark clothing, stained with blood? Ghosts or paranormal subjects tend to be foggy, not scene or done through editing/special effects.
Lighting:- it is usually low key lighting and normally takes place at night.
Actors:- there is normally a 'bad' guy and a 'vunerable' woman.
Make-up:- usually fake blood used or masks to cover the 'bad' guys face.
Props:- there tends to be some sort of murder weapon or an object which connotes scariness.
Setting:- locations are spooky, such as a woods or haunted mansion.
Editing...
The editing is normally fast and pacy which adds to the suspense and jumpiness of the horror film.
Sound...
There are lots of sounds related to horror movies, such as deep breathing, screaming or heavy footsteps. Or if set in a woods the snapping of branches.
Camera...
Lots of handheld shots to add to the mood of the horror.

Pitch of Ideas

Feedback
Idea 1
They said it was quite a good idea, these are some of the questions asked...
  • Where will it be set? - We decided that it would be set in a quarry. this is because it will give us the desired effect of the sand, it is the best ground which we could use that will suit our setting.
  • Is it practical? - It can be done but some changes might have to be made, such as the building bursting in to fire, this could be hard to do because it would be impossible to set buildings on fire with health and safety regulations, and it would be rather difficult to do it all through special effects.
  • Do you have reliable actors? - Some but were looking for a few more, we will make sure that they are reliable so they act for all of the time that we need them to act for. They will also have to be reliable so that they turn up for all of the shooting days/times which they are needed for.

Idea 2
They said this idea sounded quite exciting and original, they wondered how practical it was...
  • Will it all get into two minutes? - Yes we should do because it will use fast editing, however we may have to cut down some of the dialogue used in it, as usually there isn't much dialogue in opening scenes.
  • Will it meet opening conventions - Yes it will meet the opening conventions of a horror film, this is because it will include titles, music and lighting these will help set the tone of the whole film.
  • Name? - We haven't decided on a name yet, we will have to think of this and make sure the name ins't already taken by a already made film.

Out of the two, the one they preffered was idea 2, this is our favourite as well and it is the one we have decided to go with. However we have decided to edit our idea so it can be the best it can possibly be, this is by cutting some of the dialogue out to make the scene more interesting so people don't have to concentrate too much in the beginning as they would find this boring and not watch the remaining of the film. We will also make sure that it meets all the conventions which will make it a better horror, we will also think of a name which will relate to the storyline of the film.

Presentation of Idea's

On Friday we presented our media class with two idea's which we may use for our two minute opening. They were presented as follows:

One of our ideas was a...
Western movie.
Opening.
Chilling’ in the saloon, hear a gun shot, turn round and see barman dead on the bar, they run outside and find the town is on fire, see Indians running off with the sheriffs wife, Canyon Cash the sherriff has a showdown with an Indian who shoots himself to let the others get away.
Synopsis
A small town in Texas gets attacked by apaches, and they run off with the sheriff’s wife, they go on a journey to rescue her but find the camp abandoned with her dead, hung in the middle of the camp, they chase down the Indians and kill them.
Target audience: People who like westerns
Films its like: Pretty much all western films with Indians
USP: Tragic not romantic – unexpected, not typical story line
Credits come when they are talking in the bar
Country music
Natural lighting
Establishing shot of town on fire
Slow editing until the gun shot
On showdown, there will be an extreme close-up on Indians face, then he smiles and is shot, then it zooms out to reveal he shot himself and then he tells the Indians to run while the cowboys are all stunned.

Our second idea was...
Horror movie -
A bunch of teenagers hear stories about a haunted cellar and go down there, they see scratches in the wall and get killed off one by one by a ghost who was murdered there in 1812. When there are a couple left they investigate and go back to the cellar, one of them dies there, and the last one gets out and burns the girl’s bones and think its over, then she is killed in the grave yard.
Opening
Starts of in 1986 (black and white), two different people go down there they fall into crates as their drunk, then see the scratches, flashbacks of the girl being murdered, they hear a girl say “hello” dolly shot round to her, she smiles but then lunges at camera, screen blacks out, shot of them dead on the floor, Barrel roles. Titles (preferably in blood). In 2011 people start to tell stories about it being haunted..a bunch of teenagers dare each other to go down there, then different views of things moving about in the cellar, they walk down the stairs, the girl is stood in the corner but they don’t see her, camera focuses on her, she grins, door slams shut, focuses back on people looking freaked out, they see the girl, screen blacks out. She says her trademark “hello” lights up on her face, she looks into the camera. The end.
Target audience
People who like horrors, no-one with heart conditions because its jumpy
USP
Original setting, it has flashbacks and shows how it all started.
Films its like
Final destination because they all die one by one and theres no-one left alive at the end.
Low key lighting in the cellar
Natural lighting in the pub
Black and white for old fashioned bits

These were the ideas which we presented to the class, they gave us some feedback which meant we would adapt our idea so it would be the best it possibly could be.

Analysis of an ex-student video.

The title of the film i am going to analysis is: Invidia.

Mise-en-Scene
Costume: The man is in quite casual clothing - trousers, shirt and zip up jacket. The other person is wearing a mask with their hood up and dark clothing.
Lighting: *see lighting*
Actors: They both look like their in their teens.
Make-up: No make-up as one is a teenage boy and the other is wearing a mask.
Props: Not any props except the mask. All the props are included in the setting.
Setting: In a woods, with trees, twigs and leaves.

Editing
It has quite slow editing at the begining until the pace of the tone picks up due to the panik of the character and him running through the woods. When this happens the editing becomes much quicker. When he starts to run there is a flash of white and there is also three other flashes of white during the time he's running. The main names come at the top right hand corner of the screen at the begining, in black writing but with glowing white around them. The title then comes in the centre screen around 37 seconds in, again in black writing with glowing white around them.

Lighting
It's Low-key lighting which helps set the mood and tone of the film. It also helps tell the time of day which is night as this adds to the tone of the movie. The tone is sets is quite dark and this helps the people watching guess what type of film it is and they start to think what could happen in the remainder of the film. This is good to make enigma as it makes more people carry on watching, to answer their question.

Camera
To start with there is a pan of the setting, of the trees and area of fields around it. There is then another pan in the woods to set the scene even better. Then there is a hand-held shot which is shakey as it's the girl in the mask's POV when they are walking looking down at the ground. Then another POV shot but from the man on the grounds POV showing the girl in the mask. It then zooms in to the girls face with the mask. When the man is walking there is a close up of the foot stepping down on leaves. There's then a tracking shot of the man when he is running through the woods, followed by a hand-held shot, this then goes out to a normal shot of the man running. When the man falls over, the camera zooms in to his face to show his emotion.

Sound
To start with the music is quite eerie and slow paced which fits to the tone of the beginning. There are words wispered into the music "envy" and "jelousy" which are the main themes of the movie, the followed by "Invidia" which is the title of the film. You can then hear the rustle of leaves as someone is stepping on them. You then hear someone kicking leaves whilst their walking and calling out a name. The music starts to get more darker and quicker paced. It then starts to get louder and even more quicker paced until he starts running when there is hardly any music at all, just loud breathing from the person in the mask.

The things I like from this film is the way the main themes are wispered at the begining as this helps set the tone and makes you ask questions to yourself about these themes.
The things I don't like as much that it's quite typical to have a scary movie set in a wood.
However I think it is a good film opening.

By looking at this video, we will know what previous student videos have turned out like and what ours should be aiming to turn out like. We will also know how they structured their film, with their titles and so on, so we will know when it is best to place ours.
